The Humanities Advanced Technology and Information Institute (HATII) is part of the University of Glasgow. It provides academic programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in arts and media informatics, computer forensics, and digital preservation for archivists, records managers, data scientists and digital librarians. It fosters active research in areas at the interface of information technology and the arts and humanitieswith a primary research focus on digital curation and preservation. These include theoretical approaches to information, management and curation of digital assets, records and information management, andcultural heritage informatics and resource discovery.
HATII is also: home to the Electronic Resources Preservation Network (ERPANET, European Commission FP5 programme), leader of the Digital Preservation Cluster within the DELOS Network of Excellence (European Union IS & T programme), core partner in the UK Digital Curation Centre (DCC, Joint Information Systems Committee programme), partner in the Preservation and Long-term Access through NETworked Services project (PLANETS, European Union IS&T FP6 Programme) , lead Partner in Digital Preservation Europe (DPE, European Commission FP6 programme), consortium member of Cultural, Artistic, and Scientific Knowledge for Preservation (CASPAR, European Union FP6 programme), core partner in the SustainingHeritage Access through Multivariate ArchiviNg project (SHAMAN, European Union FP7 programme), a key proponent in the Coordination Action Project DL.org (European UnionFP7 programme, ICT Thematic Area “Digital Libraries &Technology-Enhanced Learning”), part of 3D-Coform (European Union FP7 programme), working towards long term 3D documentation of tangible cultural heritage.
The projects at HATII have resulted in several concrete contributions including the Digital Repository Audit Method Based on Risk Assessment (DRAMBORA) toolkit, Document Genre Classification Corpus (KRYS I), PLANETS (Preservation and Long-term Access through NETworked Services) preservation testbed, and Data Asset Framework.
People
Seamus Ross is Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Information,University of Toronto, and Professor at the University of Glasgow. Before joining Toronto he was Professor of Humanities Informatics and Digital Curation, and founding Director of the Humanities Advanced Technology and Information Institute (HATII). He is a former Associate Director of UK Digital Curation Centre and Co-PI of the DELOS Digital Libraries Network of Excellence. He is/was a principal Director of DigitalpreservationEurope, PLANETS, and ERPANET. He Co-chaired (with Professor Margaret Hedstrom at University of Michigan) the DELOS/NSFWorkgroup on Digital Preservation and Archiving and was a key player in Digital Culture Forum which addressed aspects of technology in the preservation of cultural heritage. He has 20 years research experience in ICT and 15 years experience in addressing issues of Digital Preservation.
Yunhyong Kim is the BlogForever Researcher at HATII, University of Glasgow. Previously, she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, UK, where she conducted research in building adaptive domain models for information retrieval. She was also the Digital Curation Resources Researcher, HATII, University of Glasgow in 2008 and a postdoctoral researcher at the UK Digital Curation Centre examining automated extraction of semantic metadata from digital objects. She has an MSc in Speech and Language processing from the University of Edinburgh, and a PhD. in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge. She also held range of postdoctoral fellowships for mathematics, including a fellowship at international institutes such as the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics.
